Cheap Online Balloons vs Professional Decor: What to Watch For

Deflated pink balloon compared with a styled pink and gold balloon display

When the consumer group Which? tested latex balloons bought online, 8 out of 21 packs broke UK safety limits for chemicals linked to cancer. None of those eight could legally be sold in the UK.

Balloons are classed as toys, so they must pass the same safety tests as other children's products. Established professional brands provide safety testing and compliance documentation. Many cheap balloons sold through online marketplaces don't, and the difference isn't something you can see on the shelf.

There is a quality gap too. Cheap balloons are more likely to pop, fade or come out in uneven sizes, which shows quickly in an arch or garland. Here is what to watch for, and how we make sure every balloon we use is safe.

What the Which? test found

In December 2025, Which? bought 21 packs of latex balloons from seven online marketplaces and shops. It tested them for nitrosamines, chemicals that can form when rubber is made and that are linked to cancer. UK toy safety rules set strict limits for them.

Failing packs reported by Which?
Where the balloons were boughtPacks that failedWorst result reported
AliExpress2More than 6 times the nitrosamine limit
eBay2More than 4 times the nitrosamine limit
Shein2More than twice the nitrosamine limit
The Range (also sold by Wilko)1More than 4 times the nitrosamine limit
Debenhams1Twice the limit for related chemicals

Five of the eight failing packs also had no safety warnings and no UKCA or CE mark. The packs Which? bought from Amazon and Temu sellers passed. All the failing products were removed from sale after the test, and Wilko recalled its balloons.

The problem isn't limited to the UK. On 28 May 2026 the European Commission fined Temu €200 million for not properly assessing the risk of unsafe products reaching shoppers. The European balloon industry welcomed the fine.

Cheap vs professional balloons

Cheap and professional balloons compared
FeatureCheap online balloonsProfessional balloons
Safety testingOften untested, or paperwork can't be checkedSafety testing and compliance documentation from established brands
Safety marksSometimes missing, or a fake CE markGenuine UKCA or CE mark with a declaration of conformity
Wall thicknessCan be uneven, so balloons pop or bulgeEven, so they inflate to a smooth, round shape
SizingVaries from balloon to balloonConsistent, so clusters and arches look balanced
ColourCan vary between packs and fade quicklyMatches from batch to batch, holds colour longer
How long they lastMay soften or deflate before the event endsHold air or helium for longer
Foil balloonsCheap inks and coatings can contain banned metals such as leadMade to EU and UK chemical limits
Who is responsibleBusinesses importing balloons for supply in the UK have importer dutiesA UK supplier takes responsibility for the product

Businesses that import balloons to supply in the UK must meet importer duties. For shoppers buying for personal use, the practical concern is that products from overseas sellers may not meet UK safety and labelling requirements.

The balloons we use

We build our displays with balloons from Kalisan and Amscan, two of the best-known professional brands in the industry, bought through established UK trade suppliers.

Professional balloons cost more to buy. We think that's a fair price for knowing exactly what is going into your home, venue or child's party, and for a display that still looks its best at the end of the night.

Why we don't inflate balloons you've bought elsewhere

We are sometimes asked to inflate or add balloons that a customer has bought online. We politely say no, and it isn't about making a sale.

If you already have balloons you love, such as a special foil or a printed name balloon, tell us when you book and we'll suggest a professional version that fits your theme.

Foil balloons, power lines and why we never release

Foil balloons have a metallic coating that conducts electricity. If one drifts into an overhead power line, it can cause sparks, fires and power cuts. In Tithby, Nottinghamshire, a stray foil balloon hit a power line, set a farmer's field alight, and briefly cut power to 271 homes.

Whatever the setting, secure handling and responsible disposal matter. Here is what we do, and what we ask our customers to do:

If you see a balloon caught in a power line, keep well back and don't try to remove it. Call 105 to report it to your local electricity network, free from any phone. If there are sparks or a fire, call 999.

Balloon safety FAQs

Are all cheap balloons unsafe?

No. Some low-cost balloons pass safety tests. The problem is that you can't tell from the packet or the price which ones have been tested and which haven't.

What are nitrosamines?

Chemicals that can form when rubber is made, if the process isn't carefully controlled. Some are linked to cancer, which is why UK and EU toy safety rules set very low limits for balloons.

Are latex balloons safe for people with latex allergies?

No. If a guest has a latex allergy, tell us when you book and we can design with foil balloons instead.

Are your balloons biodegradable?

Natural latex breaks down over time, but slowly, so it should never be released or left as litter. We collect our displays and dispose of them responsibly.

Will you add balloons I've already bought?

We don't inflate or install customer-supplied balloons, because we can't check their safety. We're happy to suggest a professional alternative.
